PPTA PAID UNION MEETING | Monday 13 May 2024 

The secondary teachers’ union PPTA (Post Primary Teachers’ Association), will be holding a paid union meeting for the members on the afternoon of Monday 13 May. Paid union meetings are a condition of the current Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.

This will mean that the school will be unable to operate the normal teaching programmes during this time. School will operate normally in the morning until 12.15pm when students will be free to depart from school. Supervision will be provided for those students that need to remain at school.

Important information on upcoming NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Assessments

The upcoming NCEA Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) for Literacy and Numeracy ensure students possess the foundational skills necessary for academic success and everyday functionality.

Understanding Literacy and Numeracy

• Literacy (Te Reo Matatini): Involves reading, writing, and communication skills.

• Numeracy (Pāngarau): Encompasses applying mathematical concepts in daily situations.

These core skills are crucial not only for academic pursuits but also for daily life, making their mastery an essential component of the NCEA.

NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

From 2024, students must meet specific literacy and numeracy requirements to earn their NCEA qualification. This involves securing 20 credits through:

• New Literacy and Numeracy standards.

• Te Reo Matatini and Pāngarau standards.

• Students will attain these credits by participating in external Common Assessment Activities (CAAs).

Assessment Format

The Literacy and Numeracy CAAs are conducted digitally, requiring students to complete their assessments on a computer. Each assessment is designed to be completed within a minimum of 60 minutes. However, students may take longer if necessary, provided it is within a single session.

2024 Assessment Schedule

Week 4 (Year 11 Students)

• Tuesday 21 May: Reading

• Wednesday 22 May: Numeracy

• Thursday 23 May: Writing

Week 5 (Year 10 Students)

• Monday 27 May: Reading

• Tuesday 28 May: Numeracy

• Wednesday 29 May: Writing

Assessment Procedures

• Year 11 Students: They will be temporarily excused from their classes to complete their assessments and will return to their regular schedules upon completion.

• Year 10 Students: Will be granted study leave from Monday 27 May to Wednesday 29 May. They must come to school only to sit for their assessments and leave once they have completed them.

The structure of these assessments is designed to minimise disruption to your child’s school day and maximise the support available for them during this critical period.

We understand the significance of these assessments and are committed to providing all necessary support to ensure our students are well-prepared and can perform to the best of their abilities.

These will be held on the following dates:

Wednesday 15 May | 3.30pm – 7pm

Thursday 16 May | 3.30pm – 7pm

Conference times are 10 minutes per appointment.

Booking Conferences Times

A conference time can be made online at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz. It is very easy to use. Simply enter the correct code as above, select the appropriate class or subject area, select the appropriate teacher, and continue to follow the instructions. Remember to leave time between each conference to allow for transition if required . Please contact Reception if you require assistance.

The Parent Teacher Conferences will take the format of a 3-way dialogue between parents, the student and the teacher. Therefore,students are expected to accompany their parents/caregivers to the conference.

By having the students participate in the conference, they will be able to discuss aspects of their own learning so far this year and share their future learning goals, thus taking an active part in their learning.
